Editor's Note: This article will be continously updated as the federal government makes more funding announcements. Last update: August 2, 2024.

The past several weeks have seen a flurry of announcements regarding the federal government's Housing Accelerator Fund, with cities all across the country being given tens (if not hundreds) of millions of dollars to build homes — part of an attempt to address Canada's housing crisis.

But where exactly is that money going, and what is it being used for? Let's take a look.

What is the Housing Accelerator Fund?

The Housing Accelerator Fund is a $4B initiative from the Government of Canada intended to provide incentive funding to local governments so that they can increase their housing supply. Municipalities are given the funds in exchange for making changes that will facilitate the creation of new housing, with each recipient laying out three- and 10-year housing goals for the funds.

Housing Accelerator Fund money is released in installments. After an initial installment, municipal governments must fulfill the requirements as outlined in their agreement with the federal government. Sometimes that means amending an existing policy, other times it may be creating an entirely new program. After meeting the requirements outlined in their agreement, further installments are then released.

On April 2, 2024, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada will be topping up the Housing Accelerator Fund with another $400M as part of Budget 2024.

When did the Housing Accelerator Fund begin distributing money?

The Housing Accelerator Fund was first introduced in the Government of Canada's 2022 Budget. It officially launched in March 2023, with the first announcement coming in September 2023, for London, Ontario. The Government of Canada says the fund will run until 2026-2027.
