Toronto is getting a new addition to its waterfront.

A 25,000 sq. foot community centre will be built at 261 Queens Quay E. According to the City, the building will be located at the base of Tridel’s and Hines’ Bayside development, which was intended for mixed-use.

Building provisions from the City and Waterfront Toronto show that a community centre was always part of the site’s development plans, BlogTO notes. Additionally, the neighbourhood is being built with small streets and rows of apartments to “promote a sense of closeness and community all year round.”

The Bayside community currently has two condo residences, Aqualina and Aquavista, and two more are in development.

No official date or renderings of the community centre have been revealed. However, the City will hold a community meeting at St. Lawrence Temporary Market on April 10 for people to “collaborate on a new vision” for the project.

Toronto’s new community centre is welcome news following the controversy of Sidewalk Labs' Quayside project. Last year, three Toronto Waterfront board members were fired due to how they handled the smart-city development. The controversial project is still in early planning stages.
