Over the past week, the Government of Canada has been making a series of funding announcements, allocating large amounts of money to countless affordable housing projects across the country through the Affordable Housing Fund.

Administered by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the Affordable Housing Fund is one of the bigger program's from the National Housing Strategy, and CMHC also announced improvements to the program last week with the introduction of a "frequent builders framework" that speeds up the application process for experienced builders.

What is the Affordable Housing Fund?

Formerly known as the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) before being renamed in November 2023, the Affordable Housing Fund provides capital towards new affordable housing projects or the renovation of existing affordable housing.

The funding is provided in the form of low-interest and/or forgivable loans.

How much money is the Affordable Housing Fund distributing?

In 2023, the Government of Canada announced an additional $1B for the Affordable Housing Fund, bring the total amount of funding to $14B.

Then, with Budget 2024 in April, the federal government committed an additional $1B, which includes $976M over five years starting in 2024-2025 and $24M in future years. The latter, the government said, would be used to "launch a new Rapid Housing stream under the Affordable Housing Fund to build deeply affordable housing, supportive housing, and shelters for our most vulnerable."

According to Budget 2024, $100M has been earmarked for 2024-2025, followed by $219M in each of the following four years.

Which projects are receiving funding?

CMHC has not outlined a target number in terms of the number of projects or units the Affordable Housing Fund will help, but the following is a list of every recipient (projects or organizations) in British Columbia to receive funding, sorted by announcement date and funding amount.
