Toronto drivers will soon have 25 more opportunities to get hit with a ticket, thanks to a new fleet of speed cameras the City is rolling out.

Toronto Mayor John Tory announced on Thursday that as part of the City's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, 25 Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are being deployed, with one going to each ward. These come in addition to the 50 already implemented cameras placed around the city.

"We now have 75 speed cameras across the city and I remain fully committed to installing a total of 150 cameras this term," Tory said. "Expanding the Automated Speed Enforcement program is a major step forward in making our neighbourhoods safer for everyone in Toronto and an effort that demonstrates our continued commitment to advancing Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan.”

It will take roughly two weeks for the new cameras to become fully activated and start sending out tickets.

According to the City, the number of traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries has declined since the inception of the Vision Zero program, which has also included initiatives such as installing speed bumps, creating School Safety Zones, adding pedestrian head starts to 1,000 intersections, and installing more red light cameras.

The 50 existing ASE cameras are already in their sixth round of locations, and are expected to keep rotating to different areas of Toronto. In December, they issued a total of 21,362 tickets to drivers, including 1,558 repeat offenders, one of which received 10 tickets on Fenn Avenue alone. Although tickets from ASE cameras won't result in demerit points, drivers will have to pay a fine.
