Toronto drivers should prepare themselves for a difficult weekend of getting around the city with several road closures and restrictions set to take effect.

Major throughways like St. Clair Avenue West, the Queensway, King Street West, and Lake Shore Boulevard West will all be affected by full or partial closures, with some restrictions taking effect as early as Friday morning.

Although some of the road closures are to allow for the City to carry out critical infrastructure work, others are for planned events and ActiveTO.

And unfortunately for those hoping to take the subway to avoid the road closures, it will sadly be experiencing service disruptions of its own. For the entirety of the weekend, there will be no subway service on Line 1 between Lawrence and St. Clair stations due to Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction. And on Sunday July 10, service work will be taking place on Line 2 between St. George and Broadview stations.

But for drivers still planning to take to the Toronto streets this weekend, here are all of the planned road closures and restrictions:

  • St. Clair Avenue West from Christie Street to Winona Drive will close for the TD Salsa on St. Clair Street festival from Saturday, July 9 at 8am to Sunday, July 11 at 11 pm.
  • Lawrence Avenue East between Warden Avenue and Birchmount road will close for the Taste of Lawrence International Food, Music and Cultural Festival from Friday, July 8 at 10 am to Sunday, July 10 at 11:59 pm.
  • Bayview Avenue from Rosedale Valley Road to Lawren Harris Square will close for ActiveTO from Saturday, July 9 at 7 am to Sunday, July 10 at 7 pm.
  • River Street from Bayview Avenue to Spruce Street will close for ActiveTO from Saturday, July 9 at 7 am to Sunday, July 10 at 7 pm.
  • Wellington Street from Yonge Street to Church Street will be reduced to one westbound lane for TTC track replacement and sidewalk improvements.
  • Travel lanes on The Queensway between Parkside Drive and Roncesvalles Avenue will be reduced to a minimum of one shared travel lane in each direction to allow for King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles TTC track replacement and road reconstruction work.
  • King Street West will close at the King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles intersection to allow for construction work.
  • Scarlett Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for culvert replacement at Humber Creek.
  • The Overlea Boulevard Bridge over the Don River will be reduced to one lane in each direction for bridge rehabilitation.
  • Lake Shore Boulevard West between Bay and York Streets will be reduced to one lane for gas main replacement.

These restrictions come in addition to a number of already ongoing road closures, details of which can be found on the City of Toronto website. The City cautions that those who need to drive in the general vicinity of road closures "should stay alert, consider alternate routes, and allow extra time to get to and from their destinations."
