Wood-beamed cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, a charming turret, a quaint pond, and multiple balconies set within lush greenery. It’s all part of a whimsical and storybook-like Los Angeles-area property that’s recently hit the market – and it’s owned by no other than Grammy-nominated Canadian musician Rufus Wainwright.
Making no secret of his plans to part with the Laurel Canyon property – and offering his fans a peek inside his abode – Wainwright took to his Instagram page earlier this month to announce the news.
To call this 1926-built, cottage-like home at 8066 Woodland Lane creatively inspiring would be an understatement. Not that that’s a surprise. In fact, according to the singer-songwriter’s Instagram post, it was within the enchanting walls of the 2,119-sq.-ft home that Wainwright wrote “Unfollow the Rules,” including what he calls one of his favourite pieces, “Peaceful Afternoon.”

The perfect home base for the right-brained set, Wainwright and his partner, Jörn Weisbrodt, purchased the property in 2016 for $1.45M. The home is currently listed for $2.2M – a figure that admittedly seems relatively low when you look at what that gets you in Toronto.
Nestled in Laurel Canyon's twisting streets, the three-bedroom, four-bathroom home is sizeable, yet resonates with a distinctly cozy charm and an aesthetic typically reserved for fairy tales. Soaked in sunlight, the charming kitchen is wide-open and features a built-in breakfast nook. Meanwhile, an equally cozy living room houses a fireplace with a mantle enveloped in vintage tiles. Perhaps most dreamy, the home’s turret houses an octagon-shaped library that’s lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Our Favourite Thing
Our favourite feature of this home is its charming turret and the library housed within it. The built-in bookshelves add to a comforting nostalgic feel reminiscent of times past, while the large windows offer peaceful views of the greenery that surrounds the home. It’s the perfect place to sit with a tea, and a notepad, laptop, or a book – or a couple hundred books – on a rainy day.
If colour gets your creative juices flowing, you’ll find no shortage of it within this property – whether on the red vaulted ceilings of the living room, bright-red bathroom walls, sunshine-yellow walls in the dining room, or the blue walls of the kitchen.
Surrounded by trees and other greenery, the home’s peaceful outdoor spaces are the type where you could get lost in a book for hours. Or, come evening, sip fine wine under the stars. The home also features a two-car garage, which is a rarity in Laurel Canyon.
One thing that’s not a rarity in Laurel Canyon are celeb neighbours. As for Wainwright and family, the musician says they’ll stay in LA, albeit in another neighbourhood. One thing’s for sure: the new owners will have big shoes to fill on the neighbour front. Comments from neighbours on Wainwright’s Instagram post thank him for playing for them from the home during lockdown.
At least the new owners of the storybook-worthy gem will have a crowd-pleasing backstory to tell visitors.
