UPDATE:On April 10, Metrolinx’s Board of Directors voted in favour of reducing fares on short-distance Go Transit trips. The new fares will come into effect on April 20 (see chart below).

The same day the TTC increased their fares, Metrolinx announced they’re lowering theirs.

To make GO Transit trips more affordable, short-distance fares will be reduced by as much as 21 per cent starting April 20, the agency said. That includes any trips taken between GO stations or bus stops in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area that are roughly 10 km or less.

The lowest PRESTO fare will drop by more than $1, from $4.71 to $3.70. Single-fare paper tickets will also be reduced, with the lowest fare going from $5.30 to $4.40.

“[This] is a huge step towards making public transit even more affordable and more attractive for the people in our communities,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster. “This gives our GO customers a better, faster and easier way to get across town for work, trips to the mall, family visits or a night out.”

But this isn’t the only change coming to GO transit fares. For trips longer than 10 km, Metrolinx will be increasing PRESTO fees by up to four per cent, and single-fare tickets by up to 10 per cent.

Before these proposed fare changes can be put in effect, Metrolinx’s Board of Directors will have to vote on them on April 10. The last time Metrolinx increased their GO Transit fares was in September 2017, City News reports.

April is shaping up to be a month of big changes for GO Transit. Just last week it was also announced that GO Train services will be expanding in the GTHA, effective April 8, to give more flexible and convenient travel options to commuters.
