Toronto police are evacuating multiple buildings in the downtown core after a construction crane collapsed into one of them Thursday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the area of Simcoe and Wellington at 10 am after receiving reports of a crane hitting a building.

Police said two buildings are being evacuated, 145 Wellington Street and 40 University Avenue.

The crane is believed to be from the site at 145 Wellington, where a 52-storey mixed-use building that includes a 13-storey tower and 476 new purpose-built rental units is proposed.

Authorities say the operator of the crane reportedly has minor injuries, however, no one else was hurt.

Toronto Fire chief Matthew Pegg said crews are now working on securing the broken sections of the tower crane and taking precautions in the event that the crane collapses further.

Pegg said a mobile crane is now at the scene and initial estimates from the hoisting engineers on scene are that the completion of operations will require 12 hours or longer to complete.

Those in the area should be mindful of road closures and to expect delays.
