A low-cost Icelandic airline is launching service in Ontario this summer, providing inexpensive trips to more than two dozen European cities.

PLAY announced on Tuesday that it will begin flying out of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport beginning June 22. The airline will offer flights to 26 destinations across Europe, including London, Berlin, and Dublin.

To celebrate its inaugural Canadian flights, PLAY is offering tickets to 13 cities, including Brussels, Copenhagen, and Paris, for as low as $169, and to Keflavik, Iceland for just $129. The low fare only applies to the Canadian departing flight of a roundtrip booking, although return flights can be found for less than $250.

The offer is available from January 10 to 31, and flights must be scheduled between August and October 2023.

"We're proud to expand PLAY service to Canada with service in Hamilton, offering both Canadian and European travellers a new way to reach iconic destinations," said Birgir Jónsson, CEO of PLAY.

"With our reliable and affordable flights, travellers can enjoy their destination rather than overspending on the flight to get there."

PLAY promises a "streamlined, no-frills service" that forgoes in-flight features like magazines, Wi-Fi, and entertainment, allowing travellers to "pay less and play more."

Passengers are permitted a personal item with each flight, and can utilize the airline's pay-for-what-you-need model to add their desired upgrades, such as in-flight meals, carry-on or checked bags, and extra legroom.

PLAY said it transported 800,000 passengers across Europe and North America in 2022, with an on-time arrival rate of over 96%.
