Toronto's Annual Christmas Concert Returns For 54th Year

Nothing says "Christmas" like Toronto's 54th annual Christmas Concert at city hall.

The free popular event returns Friday, Dec. 20, 1 p.m. in the City Hall Rotunda.

“Enjoy Christmas carols and seasonal favourites performed by the internationally acclaimed Toronto Mass Choir, Toronto Beaches Children’s & Youth Chorus, Pan Fantasy Steelband, and Tower Brass at Toronto city hall,” reads the city’s website.

The Toronto Mass Choir blends "traditional and contemporary Gospel music with Jazz, Latin and Caribbean grooves," according to the city's website. They are celebrating their 30th anniversary with upcoming tour with renowned tenor Ben Heppner.

“The event will also feature a reading by Toronto Poet Laureate, A.F. Moritz. He is Toronto’s sixth Poet Laureate and is described as a “master of metaphor.”

Moritz has published 20 books of poetry and was the 2009 Griffin Poetry Prize winner for The Sentinel. His book The New Measures received the League of Canadian Poets’ 2013 Raymond Souster Award and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award.

His most recent work is the 2018 retrospective collection The Sparrow.

Santa Claus, of course, will make a special guest appearance.

The city's website urges Torontonians to "bring your voice and carol at one of city hall’s longest-running traditions, happening every year since the building opened in 1965.”

Mayor John Tory and city councillors are expected to be at the event, which is in its 54th annual year.
