A major power outage hit downtown Toronto on Thursday afternoon, affecting a four-block radius from College to Harbour streets, and York to Sherbourne streets.

Everything from street lights to skyscrapers were affected by the power outage, including several financial district office buildings and Toronto Metropolitan University. The cause of the outage has not yet been confirmed.

Torontonians quickly took to social media to share photos and videos of the powerless downtown core, including the unusual sight of the monstrous screens at Yonge-Dundas Square having gone completely dark.

Hydro One says they are investigating the cause of the outage.

A video circulating on social media, allegedly taken around 12:30 pm on Thursday afternoon -- just before the outage was reported -- shows what appears to be crane mounted on a barge near the eastern waterfront coming into contact with a power line, sending sparks down the line before the barge begins to reverse.

According to CP24, police are attending a call for wires down in the Portlands, near Bouchette and Commissioners streets.

Some areas of downtown Toronto have had their power restored, while others continue to wait.
