Anyone wanting to keep their home on trend with the latest paint colours won't have to worry about covering their walls in an ostentatious jewel tone or even a moody taupe. In fact, it won't involve adding much personality at all. That's because Behr Paint Company released their official 2023 Colour of the Year and it's none other than a neutral beige.

The shade, dubbed Blank Canvas, looks, well, exactly how you'd expect a blank canvas to look. It's a warm off-white and, according to Behr, the colour is "meant to inspire feelings of tranquility and renewal," and "is the answer to an increased consumer desire to be present, find peace of mind and embrace the future."

“As we look to 2023, we understand that comfort will still be a driving force behind design decisions and style statements,” said Behr's Vice President of Colour and Creative Services Erika Woelfel. “Blank Canvas effortlessly offers a clean and inviting blank slate that allows individuality and creativity to flow freely. This white easily harmonizes with a wide range of hues, including neutrals, earth tones and pastels for a charming and cozy appeal. Blank Canvas also pairs beautifully with black for a dramatic impact, and with bright accents like green or cobalt blue to instantly lift your mood.”

Although the colour isn't necessarily a creative stand-out, there's no doubt that people are loving shades of white right now, with Behr Global Chief Marketing Officer Jodi Allen noting that whites are the company's top sellers.

Behr recently conducted a survey of US homeowners and found 77% of respondents said the colour white makes them feel positive, while 71% said it lowers their stress levels. And 63% said it even boosts their mood. Who knew such a basic colour could have so many benefits?

“With so many options to choose from, we wanted to spotlight the one that we believe is most versatile, and truly the perfect shade of white for any project,” Allen said.

Blank Canvas is also a favourite among DIYers and designers, according to Behr. And for those who don't want a completely white room and would rather have something more personalized, the company says the shade pairs well with pops of colour.

"In addition to inspiring renewal, positivity and a sense of calm, Blank Canvas always makes a design-forward statement, whether you’re a homeowner working on a DIY living space, or a professional painter seeking your go-to white to use on countless projects in years to come," Allen said.

To celebrate the new colour announcement, Behr is offering the chance to win $10,000 to refresh your home. Details on entering the sweepstakes can be found here.
