Speed demons beware -- a new crop of traffic speed cameras will soon be in place around Toronto, as the City expands its Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program.

Starting this month, motorists may spot 90-day warning signs at all 25 future speed camera locations (one additional camera per ward), which are expected to begin enforcement in February 2023. They’ll join the 50 cameras already installed across Toronto. These warning signs -- which are legally required as per provincial legislation -- are to warn drivers in advance and raise awareness about the new cameras prior to laying any charges.

“We want everyone to be safe on our roads and this is why we’re scaling up the City’s Automated Speed Enforcement program by adding 25 more cameras to the 50 that are already operating across the city,” stated Toronto Mayor John Tory in a release.

“This is another important step forward that will help save lives, boost road safety and reduce speeding where it matters the most. We know that speed cameras work -- they are a proven, data-driven Vision Zero tactic that are changing driver behaviour and having a positive community impact.”

The speed cameras in the City’s original fleet are also on the move; 49 will be rotated to their sixth round of locations, in efforts to reduce speeding in areas with safety concerns, and further act as a deterrent to bad actors.

One notable expectation is the camera on Parkside Drive, south of Algonquin Avenue, which will be staying put; the street, which runs along the main entrance of High Park, has been deemed a safety hazard by locals due to speeding traffic. Last fall, the intersection was the site of a fatal five-vehicle crash, allegedly caused by a speeding motorist, that claimed the lives of Little Portugal residents Fatima and Valdemar Avil.

“In response to community concerns, the device on Parkside Drive south of Algonquin Avenue (Parkdale-High Park) is being kept in this round of locations to improve compliance with the speed limit and reduce incidents of speeding on Parkside Drive,” reads a release from the City, adding that the site accounted for 9% of the 25,224 tickets handed out under the ASE program in August and 10% of the 23,163 tickets handed out in September.

According to the city, a total of 247 Part 111 charges for excessive speeding -- defined as exceeding the limit by 50 km/h or more -- have been laid this year.

The highest excessive speed detected was 146 km/h in a 50 km/h speed limit zone on Martin Grove Road north of Garfella Drive (Etobicoke North).
