In a time of uncertainty when many are without work and sectors struggle to stay afloat, Artscape is calling on artists to present pitches for the highly-anticipated new mixed-use condo development in Mississauga, Lakeview Village.
This week, Artscape, the not-for-profit urban development organization, announced a series of paid work opportunities that will be developed through one of its city-building partners, Lakeview Community Partners Limited. This will be conducted through its initiative Artscape Atelier, a recently launched "social enterprise" dedicated to creating opportunities for artists to participate in city-building and shaping communities through site-specific public art, public realm, and creative placemaking interventions.

This includes a call for artist proposals that will generate over $100,000 in work for artists at Lake View Village, the 177-acre mixed-use community coming to Mississauga’s waterfront, which was once home to the Lakeview Power Generating Station lands.
The submission call is open to artists based in the Mississauga and Greater Toronto region, as well as within the Artscape artist community. The opportunity will see 17 artists hired who will be tasked with completing four projects that will be displayed throughout Lakeview Village.
Artscape is looking for sculptors, digital multimedia artists, painters, and illustrators, who will be responsible for making a construction hoarding illustration, an interactive sculpture and installation, a mural series, and an original poetry installation by an Indigenous artist.

The first project is for the construction hoarding illustration, which will represent a 'flipbook' that will be digitally printed across 400-feet of construction hoarding to create the effect of an animation coming to life as community members walk, bike, and drive across Lakeshore Boulevard East and Hydro Road.
The large-scale, interactive sculpture and installation will serve as a focal point in the midst of a field of one-million sunflowers, connecting the street-level to the view of Lake Ontario.
The third opportunity invites 14 artists to create a 25 x 8-foot mural sharing ‘the message they believe the world needs to hear right now’. The mural creation process will be captured and shared with the public and revealed later in the summer.
The fourth opportunity will be a collaboration with Indigenous leaders in Mississauga to identify a poet who will be commissioned to create an original work that speaks to the protection, reverence and sacred relationship to Lake Ontario. The poem will be printed on 50-feet of construction hoarding alongside Lakeshore Boulevard East.
The projects will have budgets that range from $3,000 to $40,000

“Through our relationships with developers and artists, we are in a unique position to make a difference. We believe we have a responsibility to utilize our collective resources and connections to demonstrate leadership in this moment to help artists earn a living,” said Assaf Weisz, Chief Strategy Officer and Director, Creative Placemaking Lab, Artscape.
“Our social enterprise, Artscape Atelier offers a tremendous opportunity for artists and urban developers to work together on creating a built environment that is not only functional but contributes to the aesthetics of the community in a very positive way by turning the city into a giant canvas for creative expression.”
