On Tuesday, the Province of British Columbia announced 17 new affordable housing projects that will together deliver nearly 2,000 residential units across the province.

The projects were announced as part of the third intake of the $3.3B Community Housing Fund, a program that was created in 2018 with the goal of developing over 20,000 affordable homes for individuals, families, seniors, Indigenous people, and people living with disabilities.

The 17 projects announced on Tuesday will produce 1,954 affordable rental homes spread out across Metro Vancouver and the coastal region, with each of the projects to be operated by a non-profit organization. Under the Community Housing Fund, 70% of a project's housing units are provided at rents that are geared to income while the remaining 30% are provided at or below market rents for households with moderate incomes.

"The rental housing crisis touches every corner of British Columbia, and we're thrilled to see that non-profits in Metro Vancouver will soon be constructing more than 1,900 new affordable rental homes," said Jill Atkey, CEO of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association. "These homes are critical for British Columbians experiencing affordability challenges today, but importantly, they will also be home to thousands more in the generations to come. But our work is not done, and we will continue to push every government to increase investment into safe, secure and affordable housing."

Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon made the announcement on Tuesday at 7567 140 Street in Surrey, the site of an affordable housing development that received funding as part of the second intake of the Community Housing Fund. That project, which will be operated by the Kekinow Native Housing Society, is expected to be completed later this spring. The Province says it will launch the next round of intake in late 2024 or early 2025.

For this latest round, BC Housing accepted request for proposals between August and November 2023. The 17 projects that will receive funding are:
