Toronto Commemorates The 74th Anniversary Of D-Day: We Remember The Sacrifice
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, “Operation Overlord” began. This marked the start to the long-awaited invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, with Allied armies from the U.S., Britain and Canada landing on the coast of Normandy.
Fourteen thousand young Canadians stormed Juno Beach on D-Day.
Their courage, determination, and self-sacrifice were the immediate reasons for the success in those critical hours.
The fighting they endured — at such young ages — was fierce and frightening.
The price they paid was high.
Battles for the beachhead cost 340 Canadian lives, plus 574 wounded.
To these brave people, we owe the freedom that we take for granted. Let us never forget their sacrifice.
The City of Toronto will commemorate the 74th anniversary of D-Day. The one-hour ceremony begins at noon at Nathan Phillips Square. Members of the public are invited to join Canadian war veterans as well as members of Council.
