Having sex in a home you share with in-laws, roommates or kids can be awkward, but if you share your home with others, it doesn't mean you have to live a life of celibacy. Sexologist and relationship expert, Dr. Jess O'Reilly says when it comes to having sex in a shared home, you just have to get a little creative to increase comfort for all parties.

Below, Dr. Jess shares strategies for quieter sex so you don't have to worry about waking up the whole house this Valentine's Day.

Do it in the shower

Almost every bathroom door (unlike many bedroom doors) has a lock and the running water helps to drown out the heavy breathing and sounds of pleasure. You also benefit from the sounds of the shower, as the water helps to drown out any distracting household noises that can detract from your enjoyment.

Get kinky!

Use a soft, cloth gag or play with power and insist that your lover remain perfectly silent if s/he wants you to continue to please.

Focus on your breath

Extend your breath to slow down. The benefits can include more intense and multiple orgasms as well as a quieter ride.

Slow down

Try S-L-O-W sex to keep the bed and floor creaking to a minimum. When you slide an object inside of you as s-l-o-w-l-y as possible, your nerve endings react in the most explosive of ways. Not only does that object feel like it never ends (read: HUGE), but as the arousal sensations build, so too will the power of your orgasm.

Turn up other sounds

Put white noise machines in the bedrooms, run the fan, use a (de)humidifier, open windows and/or install a sound/weather strip on bedroom doors. All of these techniques can help drown out any amorous sounds from down the hall. Just don't crank up the TV or stereo, that might be a little too obvious.

Use props

Put your face in the pillow, cover yourselves with blankets and slide a towel between the door and the floor to reduce how far the sounds travel.

Embrace the challenge

Tease, titillate and pull out all the stops to drive your lover wild and watch them struggle to control their moans and groans.

Show your appreciation

Make eye contact and use facial expressions (e.g. smiles) to communicate appreciation and desire. Also, make note of physical changes (e.g. curled toes, arched back, tense pelvic region) to gauge your lover’s reaction.

Try a new position

Certain positions can help stifle sounds try these two moves for super silent sex.

The Snake: Put pillows by your heads so you have something to breathe/scream into. One partner lies on their stomach and the other lies on top of them sliding in from behind.

Three Silent Spoons: If you want to sneak in a quickie before bedtime, try a spooning position with a third spoon: a pillow which you can use to muffle your sounds.

If silent sex isn't for you, get away once in a while to let loose. Have sex in the car or offer to housesit for friends or take full advantage of times when you're home alone.

Silent sex is hot, but a bit of variety that includes some loud, uninhibited hotel or car sex keeps the flame burning!
