More than two years after its parent company, Berkeley Events, was placed under receivership, Toronto’s Berkeley Church has been purchased by Hyde Park Homes, with the company revealing to STOREYS that they have plans to reopen the historic event venue later this year.
Built in 1871, the three-storey, brick-faced building at 315-317 Queen Street East in Corktown was initially a Wesleyan Methodist Church. In 1999, the space was converted into an event venue, used for weddings, corporate events, parties, conferences, and even some concerts (Tegan and Sara, Feist, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, just to name a few). The property was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1997.
An October 8, 2025 motion record from msi Spergel Inc. first identified Hyde Park Homes Limited as the purchaser of the Berkeley Church property, but the development company’s president Gary Freedman confirms that the transaction closed earlier this month.
“Hyde Park Homes purchased the historic Berkeley Church for the purposes of restoring the exterior and interior of the church (designed in the Gothic Revival style) and reopening the property in the fall of 2026 as a multi-purpose hospitality venue, with a well-known Toronto restaurant/food and beverage partner,” Freedman told STOREYS in an emailed statement.
“Once the restoration has been completed, the property will be suitable for weddings, corporate and charitable events, festivals, concerts and other theatrical performances. Further details to be announced at a future date.”
Freedman also confirms that Hyde Park Homes’ purchase extends only to the 315-317 Queen Street East property, and not the other event venues formerly operated by Berkeley Events and named in the receivership order from July 7, 2023 (with the company owing almost $10.5 million to TD). Those venues include 301-311 Queen Street East (formerly the Berkeley Fieldhouse), 315-317 King Street East (formerly La Maquette), and 504 Jarvis (formerly the Berkeley Bicycle Club).
A separate receiver, MNP Ltd., has assumed control over 301-311 Queen in particular, and its most recent filing is a Sales Process Approval Order from January 16, 2024. At that time, msi Spergel Inc. and MNP Ltd. were in talks to market the parcels together, as a 19-storey development slated for the 301-311 Queen property was anticipated to cantilever over the Berkeley Church lot, utilizing its air rights.
Whether any progress has been made on the sale of 301-311 Queen, as well as the future of the planned development, is currently unclear.
