On Friday morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced major changes to his cabinet, including the appointment of Ontario MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith to Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. Erskine-Smith is replacing former Housing Minister Sean Fraser, who stepped into the role in July 2023 and announced his departure from the federal cabinet on Monday, citing his desire to spend more time with his family in heartfelt remarks to the press.

Erskine-Smith comes to Trudeau’s cabinet with a background in commercial litigation and after nine years as Member of Parliament for Beaches-East York. He assumed that role in October 2015. More recently, Erskine-Smith ran for leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party, but came in close second to Bonnie Crombie. He publicly stated shortly thereafter that he wouldn’t be seeking re-election in the next federal election.

Erskine-Smith is one of eight Liberal MPs joining the cabinet as a result of Friday’s shuffle. In addition, four current members of cabinet have been reassigned to new roles.

New:

  • Rachel Bendayan, Minister of Official Languages and Associate Minister of Public Safety;
  • Élisabeth Brière, Minister of National Revenue;
  • Terry Duguid, Minister of Sport and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada;
  • Darren Fisher, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence;
  • David J. McGuinty, Minister of Public Safety;
  • Ruby Sahota, Minister of Democratic Institutions and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario;
  • and Joanne Thompson, Minister of Seniors.

Reassigned:

  • Anita Anand, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade;
  • Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency;
  • Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour;
  • and Ginette Petitpas Taylor, President of the Treasury Board.

Friday’s cabinet shuffle caps off what turned out to be an action-packed week for the federal government, with not only Fraser announcing his resignation, but long-time Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland turning in her resignation as well. ” Freeland was swiftly replaced by Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs of Canada Dominic LeBlanc on Tuesday after former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney declined Trudeau's ask to take a place in the cabinet.
